CSR Chair "Alejandro Grullón" and CNCCMDL start diploma course on climate change

Seeks to train professionals in public policies on this matter

Santo Domingo, D.N. – The Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability "Alejandro E. Grullón E.", in collaboration with the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), began the Diploma in Public Policies and Climate Change, an academic initiative which seeks to train Dominican professionals to align national strategies in this area with international initiatives for mitigation and adaptation to global warming.

This diploma course, which has 64 hours of training, is also sponsored by the Universal Group and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The aim is to provide attendees with tools and skills to promote mitigation and adaptation to climate change, based on an interdisciplinary and comprehensive analysis of the physical, economic, social and public policy aspects of this phenomenon.

Harmonize national policies with international agreements

The objective is that this trained human capital can make decisions that allow harmonizing the national climate change policy and the international agreements ratified by the country.

This first version will be taught at the Santo Tomás de Aquino campus of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), in Santo Domingo, for a total of 27 professionals and officials from various public institutions such as the Central Bank, the Environment Ministries and Natural Resources; Foreign Affairs, Finance, Energy and Mines; Industry, Commerce and MiPymes; of Tourism; Agriculture and Women.

Representatives of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), the Environmental Commissions of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, the National Energy Commission, the Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE), the National Institute of Resources Hydraulics (INDRHI), the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT), the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), the National Statistics Offices (ONE) and Meteorology (ONAMET) and the Environmental Network of Dominican Universities ( QUICK).

Training content

During this training, they will address, among other topics, global environmental and climate problems and the framework of international agreements on these issues, success stories on climate policy and governance instruments, challenges of the Dominican Republic, the political and legal framework and the tools available for the formulation of laws on this topic, as well as what opportunities there are to develop a model of sustainable economic growth and low emissions.

The diploma course will be taught by professors Michela Izzo, Omar Ramírez Tejada, Gustavo Mena, José Contreras, Yomayra Martinó and Gabriel Jaramillo, among others.

Climate change is one of the key global challenges for humanity's survival. It is estimated that the impacts on insular territories such as the Dominican case will be very intense, for which it is urgent to have highly qualified teams that implement concrete actions to reduce global warming, adapt to the new climate reality and generate resilience.
