Santo Domingo, R. D.- October 9, 2020 - The Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and the Popular Foundation, within the framework of the "Alejandro E. Grullón E." Sustainability Chair, held the Dialogue on Corporate Social Responsibility: Public-private alliances for sustainable development, given by the Mr. Mauricio Ramírez Villegas, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic; Mrs. María Cortés Puch, Vice President of the Network Program of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN); and Mrs. Berenice Méndez, Director of Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility at Grupo Ramos, representing Sanar Una Nación.
The welcoming remarks were given by Mr. Ramírez Villegas, who highlighted the role of the academy in the search for alternative solutions to generate the transformations that society demands in the current context. Ramírez affirmed that "the academy plays a fundamental role in the creation of capacities for the training of professionals that respond to the great challenges that the country and the world face."
In the first place, Mrs. María Cortés Puch defined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change as the global action framework that calls for mobilizing governments, the private sector and civil society in a scheme of shared responsibility. Secondly, Cortés highlighted that facing the various problems and proposing transformative actions to comply with the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs is an urgent and complex task.
In this sense, public-private alliances show a new problem-solving model, because through their networks a collective intelligence and more horizontal collaboration mechanisms are created with actors of diverse and complementary natures. “These inclusive alliances built on principles and values, with a shared vision and goals, that place people and the planet at the center are necessary at the global, regional, national and local levels,” said Cortés Puch.
Lastly, Mrs. Berenice Méndez presented the Corporate Social Responsibility alliance "Sanar Una Nación", made up of Grupo Rica, Grupo Popular, Grupo Ramos and Grupo Universal, united in this work with the international non-profit organization Citihope Relief & Development and with the support of Pagés BBDO.
This alliance is the most important in health matters in the Dominican Republic, being a true example of a "union of wills", having more than 100 allied institutions in the development of projects that contribute to improving the health of the most vulnerable groups. such as children, pregnant and lactating mothers, and the elderly. “Successful progress in sustainable development requires alliances between governments, the private sector and civil society,” said Méndez.
