Santo Domingo, R.D.- Within the framework of its formative meetings in the area, the Sustainability Chair "Alejandro E. Grullón E." from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), presented the topic "Business Practices in Circular Economy".

During the welcoming remarks, Angye Rincón, director of the chair, highlighted the importance of alliances between the private sector and academia, since they contribute to the discussion of relevant issues in our context.

Dr. Bélgica Pacheco, professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, was the moderator of the session that was attended by Tomás Zamora, director of Innovation at Colchones Delax; Ana María García, environmental technician at Consum Cooperativa, and María José Martínez, Lienzo restaurant.

In her speech, Pacheco stated that unsustainable consumption and production trends are the cause of the brutal use of raw materials, which has generated a series of plans worldwide to improve the current situation. In addition, she specified that sustainability supposes a balance between the social, environmental and economic dimensions.

The teacher, referring to the concept of "circular economy", explained that companies try to resemble natural ecosystems, where by-products are capable of being reinserted in a new life cycle. She also pointed out that, when thinking about the integral management of by-products, the value chain must be extended as much as possible in the different stages, with the purpose of finally taking advantage of these materials.

The activity that took place on Friday, July 16, 2021 and was transmitted through a virtual platform, included the presentation of the profile of the Valencian companies Colchones Delax, Ecológicos and Lienzo, as examples of SMEs that implement circular economy models.
